Nigeria is set to join other member nations of the Commonwealth on Monday, 11th March, for the 2024 Commonwealth Observance Day. The Federal Government is emphasizing the importance of resilience and collaboration to transform education within the Commonwealth, with a focus on ensuring equal access to quality education for all individuals. Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, SAN, highlighted this commitment during a news conference in Abuja.

Mamman emphasized the strength and unity within the diverse Commonwealth family, noting that there is a collective effort needed to build resilience in the face of global challenges. As the nations navigate transformative times, collaboration amongst member nations is crucial to guarantee the delivery of quality education for all. He explained that the Commonwealth of Nations is a unique international association of 56 countries united by the commitment to attain and promote peace and prosperity.

The theme for the 2024 Commonwealth Observance Day, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Commonwealth”, reflects the shared values and priorities of the Commonwealth as a whole. Mamman stressed the importance of resilience and collaboration in transforming education to ensure equal access to quality education for all. The Federal Government is investing in innovative teaching methods, supporting teachers, embracing technology, and promoting a culture of lifelong learning to create a more equitable and prosperous future nationwide.

Mamman urged the 36 States Ministry of Education and Federal Capital Territory Education Board to commemorate the Day on 11th March, 2024. This commemoration presents an opportunity to promote democracy, human rights, cultural diversity, cooperation, equality, and mutual respect for nation-building. Schools were notified to prepare students for various activities such as the Commonwealth youth lecture, quiz competition, parade of the Commonwealth Flags, poetic rendition, and dramatization of the 2024 Commonwealth Observance theme.

The youth lecture topics focused on the role of Youth in enhancing the realization of shared values and goals for the promotion of peace and unity. The activities leading up to the Observance Day aimed to educate students about the Commonwealth member countries, values being promoted, and issues that inspire reflection and behavioral change towards a more inclusive and equitable attitude towards life.

In preparation for the Observance Day, invitations were sent to the National Assembly, relevant Diplomats, and other dignitaries within the Commonwealth community in Nigeria to gather in the spirit of unity and solidarity. The event is set to highlight the importance of collaboration and resilience in transforming education for a more prosperous future for all.
