The Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has taken a strong stance against the leadership of the Labour Party (LP), accusing them of mishandling the ongoing leadership crisis within the party. In a statement released by CNPP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, James Ezema, they called for the resignation of the national chairman, Barr Julius Abure, while praising the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for refusing to endorse the outcome of the controversial fractional national convention.

The CNPP highlighted the lack of internal democracy in most Nigerian political parties and commended INEC for upholding the principles of democracy by not endorsing the results of the contentious national convention organized by a faction of the Labour Party. They emphasized the importance of inclusive representation, the rule of law, and the protection of individuals’ rights within political parties in a liberal democracy like Nigeria.

Referring to a judgment from the Federal High Court, the CNPP pointed out that the Labour Party was established by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on behalf of Nigerian workers. They criticized the Julius Abure faction for not following a court order that called for a more inclusive and expansive national convention. By excluding the NLC and other key stakeholders from the decision-making process, CNPP argued that the leadership’s actions were misguided and lacked accountability.

CNPP noted that the current leadership crisis within the Labour Party could have been avoided if democratic principles such as inclusivity, justice, and accountability were upheld. They called for Barr Julius Abure to resign as the National Chairman in order to bring a resolution to the crisis and restore the party’s integrity.

As a body representing all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria, CNPP stressed the importance of democratic values and transparency within political organizations. They highlighted the need for proper consultation and inclusivity in decision-making processes to prevent unnecessary conflicts and power struggles within party leadership.

In conclusion, CNPP urged all political parties in Nigeria to adhere to democratic principles and promote internal democracy to ensure the fair and just representation of their members. By holding leaders accountable and fostering transparency, political parties can strengthen their credibility and trust among the public.
