The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has amended its charges against the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, revealing how he impersonated former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha. According to the EFCC, Emefiele connived with Odoh Ocheme, who is currently on the run, to withdraw the sum of $6.2 million, claiming it was a request from the SGF.

This revelation compounds the legal troubles for Emefiele who is already facing multiple charges. The EFCC submission was made before Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. The former SGF Mustapha had earlier denied allegations of conniving with Emefiele to withdraw the said sum of money, which was claimed to be funding for foreign election observer missions.

Emefiele’s alleged impersonation of Mustapha was detailed in a report by The Punch, with the EFCC claiming the former CBN governor connived with Odoh Ocheme to obtain $6.2 million from the apex bank. They claimed that Mustapha had requested the money with reference number SGF.43/L.01/201, stating that it was for a contingent logistic advance in line with the directive from then-President Muhammadu Buhari. Emefiele claimed that the CBN was asked to release the money as requested by the SGF.

Despite the allegations and legal battles, Emefiele was granted permission to travel out of Abuja by the FCT Federal High Court after filing for the review of his bail application. His lawyer, Mathew Bukka, filed for this permission on his behalf and it was granted on Thursday morning. Emefiele is facing charges related to misappropriation of funds and abuse of office filed by the EFCC.

In summary, the amended charges against Emefiele point to his alleged impersonation of the former SGF Mustapha, adding more legal complications to his already troubled situation. With his ongoing legal battles and the latest court permission to travel, the case against the former CBN governor continues to unfold. Source: Legit.ng
