The second edition of the 14-kilometre Calabar Marathon is set to take place on Saturday, featuring 250 athletes including runners from Cameroon. The Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Ekpenyong Ojoi, confirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Calabar. The event will showcase top marathon runners from Nigeria competing against their international counterparts.
As of Tuesday, Cameroon was the only country that had expressed interest in participating, but more entries were expected before the registration deadline. The marathon is a collaborative effort between the Cross River Tourism Bureau and the Calabar Marathon Foundation. The goal of the race, supported by the Cross River State Government under Governor Bassey Otu, is to provide a platform for youths to showcase their natural talent and steer them away from negative influences.
Mr. Ojoi emphasized the importance of engaging the youth in productive activities to prevent idleness leading to criminal behavior, substance abuse, and other societal issues. The marathon route will commence from the Millennium Park and conclude at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The government’s endorsement of the Calabar Marathon indicates a commitment to empowering the youth and promoting a healthier lifestyle through sports. By organizing such events, the authorities aim to create opportunities for young athletes to excel and inspire others to embrace a more positive path.
In addition to offering an avenue for athletes to showcase their talents, the marathon serves as a platform for promoting tourism and enhancing the reputation of Calabar as a sports destination. The event is part of a broader strategy to leverage sports to drive development and foster social cohesion in the community.
The marathon is not only a sporting event but also a symbol of unity and collaboration among different countries, as evidenced by the participation of international athletes. It highlights the shared passion for running and the spirit of competition that transcends borders.
The Calabar Marathon embodies the values of perseverance, determination, and discipline, which are essential for success both on and off the track. Through this event, the organizers aim to instill these values in the younger generation and inspire them to strive for excellence in all their endeavors.
The participation of Cameroon runners in the upcoming Calabar Marathon exemplifies the diverse and inclusive nature of the event. It underscores the power of sports to bring people together, irrespective of their backgrounds or nationalities.
Overall, the Calabar Marathon is not just a race but a celebration of athleticism, sportsmanship, and unity. It provides a platform for athletes to shine, communities to come together, and individuals to challenge themselves beyond their limits. As the event approaches, anticipation grows, and excitement builds for what promises to be an exhilarating showcase of talent and determination.
