The Rivers State House of Assembly has screened and cleared the nine commissioners re-appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. These commissioners had resigned during a political crisis between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. They were asked to leave back in November 2023, in solidarity with Wike. However, the applicability of their reappointments is part of the resolution that was suggested during the intervention in the crisis by President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Fubara resubmitted the names of the nine nominees a few days ago, which were finally screened and cleared by the Rivers State House of Assembly. Interestingly, they were spared any questions and were simply asked to “take a bow and leave”. These developments followed the tensions that arose in the State when a majority of lawmakers served an impeachment notice on Governor Fubara. This led to widespread political unrest, with the governor responding by rallying his supporters on the streets to defend himself against the impeachment call.
The crisis led to the division of the house into factions, with 28 out of the 32 members siding with Fubara’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike. President Bola Tinubu had to intervene to restore peace and order in the state which resulted in eight-point resolutions. One of those resolutions was the reappointment of the commissioners who had expressed loyalty to Wike through their resignations.
