The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) convened on Tuesday, the 27th day of February 2024, to address the pressing issues faced by the masses and workers in the country. The NEC had previously ordered a 2-Day Nationwide Protest to protest the government’s policies that have led to increased suffering and hunger among the people, including the hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the floating of the Naira.

After reviewing the execution of the first day of the nationwide protest, the NEC commended Nigerians, NLC affiliates, state councils, workers, and civil society allies for showing solidarity and peacefully demonstrating their outrage against the government’s actions. The NEC appreciated the strong message sent by Nigerian workers and the masses to demand accountability from those in leadership positions.

As a result, the NEC decided to suspend street action for the second day of the protest, as it had achieved its objectives on the first day. However, nationwide action was set to continue with simultaneous press conferences across all states, emphasizing the demand for the government to address the grievances raised by the NLC.

The NEC also extended the timeline for the government to implement the agreements reached on the 2nd day of October 2023, as well as other demands presented during the protest. The new deadline was set for the 13th day of March 2024, with a 7-day ultimatum extension. If the government fails to comply within the specified timeframe, the NEC will convene to decide on further actions to take.

The NLC, through its President Comrade Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Comrade Ismail Bello, reaffirmed its commitment to defending and promoting the interests of Nigerian workers and the marginalized masses. The NEC expressed a determination to continue engaging with the government to address the hardships faced by the people and protect their rights.

In conclusion, the NEC’s resolution at the end of the meeting highlighted the unity and determination of the NLC, as well as the importance of holding the government accountable for its actions. The NLC remains steadfast in its mission to fight for the rights and well-being of Nigerian workers and the broader population, as demonstrated through its recent protest actions and ongoing advocacy efforts.
