The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Babayo Akuyam, and his deputy, Ahmed Abdullahi, have tendered their resignations from their positions. The resignations were announced during a plenary session on Wednesday, with Mr. Akuyam representing the PDP in the Hardawa State Constituency, and Abdullahi representing the PDP in the Dass State Constituency.
The reason for their resignations was to make way for the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, and his deputy, Jamilu Dahiru, to return to their positions. This decision comes after the Court of Appeal in Abuja, in November 2023, sacked Suleiman from the PDP in the Ningi Central State Constituency and Dahiru from the PDP in the Bauchi Central State Constituency. The court also ordered a re-run in the constituencies during the March 11, 2023 general election.
Following the re-run election on Feb. 3 and Feb. 4, 2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Suleiman and Dahiru as the winners in their respective constituencies. This led to the agreement among the lawmakers for Akuyam and Abdullahi to step down and allow Suleiman and Dahiru to resume their positions.
In his statement, the outgoing speaker, Akuyam, expressed gratitude to the lawmakers and legislative staff for their support and cooperation during his time in office. He also commended the outgoing speaker and deputy for their commitment to the agreement and pledged to continue providing effective legislation for the betterment of the people.
The resignation of Akuyam and Abdullahi marks a significant transition in the leadership of the Bauchi State House of Assembly. It reflects a commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting the outcomes of legal processes, such as the court rulings and electoral re-runs. This process of succession and transfer of power demonstrates a commitment to democratic principles and the will of the people.
As the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, and his deputy, Jamilu Dahiru, resume their positions, it is expected that they will continue to fulfill their responsibilities and represent the interests of their constituents. The leadership change in the Bauchi State House of Assembly highlights the importance of adherence to legal processes and the peaceful transfer of power in a democratic society.
In conclusion, the resignations of Babayo Akuyam and Ahmed Abdullahi, and the return of Abubakar Suleiman and Jamilu Dahiru, mark a significant moment in the political landscape of Bauchi State. This transition demonstrates a commitment to upholding democratic values and the rule of law, as well as ensuring continuity and stability in the leadership of the state legislature.
