Pastor Azemhe Azena has recently emerged as the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate for the upcoming Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024. This victory came after a successful primary where Azemhe garnered a total of 211 votes, surpassing three other aspirants to secure the party’s ticket for the gubernatorial race.
Azemhe’s journey to becoming the NNPP candidate was marked by his departure from the Labour Party last month, citing alleged ill-treatment from the Akoko-Edo Local Government chairman of the party towards him and his supporters during a campaign visit to the area. In pursuit of his political aspirations to govern Edo State, Azemhe made the strategic decision to switch to the New Nigeria People’s Party, which has now propelled him to the forefront of the governorship race.
In the primary election, Azemhe faced competition from other aspirants, including Sebastian Iyere with 25 votes, Balogun Engealeyeme Sunday with 17 votes, and Peter Okoeguale with 100 votes. Despite the stiff competition, Azemhe emerged victorious, setting the stage for a showdown with candidates from other political parties vying for the Dennis Osadebey Avenue government house.
Among Azemhe’s opponents in the governorship race are Senator Monday Okpebholo representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asue Ighodalo from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party. Additionally, Paul Obazele, a well-known Nollywood veteran Actor and Director affiliated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Bishop Akhalame representing the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), are also in the running for the governorship seat.
As the NNPP candidate, Azemhe now embarks on a challenging campaign journey, seeking to garner support and votes from the electorate to secure victory in the upcoming governorship election. His platform will focus on addressing critical issues facing Edo State and presenting his vision for the state’s development and progress. With a mix of political experience and grassroots support, Azemhe aims to emerge as the preferred choice for the people of Edo State to lead them forward in the next phase of governance.
