The leadership of a rival camp in the Labour Party has strongly condemned the picketing of the national headquarters of the party in Abuja on Wednesday, March 20, by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) loyal to Comrade Joe Ajaero. The NLC members gathered around the Labour Party’s main office in Abuja and demanded the sack of the party’s chairman, Julius Abure, accusing him of financial impropriety.
The dispute between the Abure and Pa Lamidi Apapa camps within the Labour Party has escalated, but both factions seem to be united in their disapproval of the NLC’s actions in picketing the party’s headquarters. Arabambi Abayomi, a factional spokesperson of the Labour Party, has called for the immediate arrest of Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, accusing him of attempting to assassinate their democratically-elected administration.
Abayomi criticized Ajaero for his role in the picketing of the party’s headquarters, even though there has been ongoing tension between his camp and Chairman Abure. He expressed his disdain for Ajaero’s actions, stating that the NLC should stay out of the internal affairs of the Labour Party. Despite their internal squabbles, Abayomi emphasized the need for the party to resolve its leadership issues and uphold its integrity.
The internal crisis within the Labour Party has intensified due to its strained relationship with the NLC. The NLC members protested at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, calling for the postponement of the party’s convention and demanding the resignation of Chairman Julius Abure. The protest led to significant property damage at the party’s headquarters.
The LP issued a statement condemning the actions of the NLC members, describing the protest as a criminal act. The factional national spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, expressed outrage at the unlawful intrusion into the party’s headquarters and the destruction of its properties. The LP emphasized the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts within the party and called for accountability and respect for democratic processes.
Overall, the conflict between the Labour Party factions and the NLC demonstrates the challenges faced by political organizations in Nigeria. The need for transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic principles is critical for the stability and credibility of political parties and labor unions. As the situation unfolds, it is essential for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue, peaceful resolution, and respect for the rule of law to uphold the democratic values of Nigeria.
