Atiku Abubakar, the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 presidential election, has sent an important message to Governors Fubara and Kefas of Rivers state and Taraba state, respectively, following their electoral victory at the Supreme Court. The apex court on Thursday validated their election and dismissed all appeals filed by their major rivals. Reacting, Atiku maintained that their victory “reinforced the hope of the survival of our democracy.” In a unanimous judgment, a five-member court panel held that the appeal by Tonye Cole of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was unmeritorious. Similarly, the apex court upheld the election of Kefas of the PDP and dismissed the appeal filed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)’s candidate, Muhammad Sani Yahaya on Thursday.
In response to the Supreme Court judgment, Atiku celebrated the victory and congratulated Governors Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers and Agbu Kefas of Taraba. He stated, “Indeed, their victory has reinforced the hope of the survival of our democracy, which citizens are getting disillusioned and disenchanted with the APC’s win-at-all-cost policy and brazen disregard for the rule of law. I enjoin all Nigerians to be vigilant and to always rely on lawful means in seeking redress as I have always done, and by the grace of God, we shall triumph. Accept my congratulations, Your Excellencies. -AA”
Earlier, Siminalayi Fubara had expressed his gratitude to God, President Bola Tinubu, and the minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his triumph at the Supreme Court. The governor declared his resolve to remain committed to the purpose for which he was elected as governor, saying nothing would distract his governance.
The affirmation of Kefas’ election was by the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja over the outcome of the March 18 governorship election in Taraba state. The petition of the NNPP candidate, Sani Yahaya, was dismissed by the three-member panel of justices of the tribunal over a lack of merit. Yahaya had alleged non-compliance to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, overvoting, election result sheet manipulation, and violence in some polling units during the election. This is a great victory for the PDP family, the Nigerian electorate, and all lovers of Democracy and Justice.
