Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a statement to clarify his relationship with Daniel Bwala, who previously served as a spokesperson for his presidential campaign. Atiku emphasized that Bwala’s association with him was limited to his role as a spokesperson during the 2022-2023 presidential campaign and that Bwala was never his aide beyond this specific position.
In a statement released by Atiku’s media office, it was emphasized that Bwala’s role was solely as a spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation and that he was not an aide to the former Vice President. The statement called for the media and the public to accurately define Bwala’s role in Atiku’s campaign.
Following his time as Atiku’s spokesperson, Bwala expressed his willingness to work in the administration of President Bola Tinubu and met with the President in Paris, France. After the meeting, Bwala shared a message of hope from Tinubu via a post on X, where he expressed, “It was a pleasure to meet with the father of the nation, @officialABAT President Bola Tinubu, in Paris today. He continues to share his thoughts and demonstrate his passion to lead Nigeria out of the woods.” Bwala had also previously met with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
In response to the public reaction to his meeting with Tinubu, Bwala disclosed that he had informed Atiku about his decision before visiting the President.
This clarification from Atiku comes after Bwala’s public appearances and statements created confusion about his role and association with the former Vice President. By addressing the matter through an official statement, Atiku’s media office sought to clarify the nature of Bwala’s involvement in Atiku’s campaign and subsequently disassociate him from any ongoing relationship beyond the specified role of spokesperson.
The situation underscores the importance of clear communication and transparency in political associations and public representations. It also highlights the need for individuals associated with political figures to be mindful of the perceptions and implications of their actions, particularly in the public domain. Atiku’s decision to address the issue through an official statement demonstrates a commitment to clarity and accuracy in conveying information about his affiliations and associations. It also serves as a reminder of the complexities and sensitivities involved in navigating political relationships and public perceptions.
