The Northern Ethnic Youth Group Assembly (NYEGA) has issued a plea to Northern senators to show support for Senate President Godswill Akpabio in order to promote national unity and progress. This message was delivered by the group’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, in a statement released in Abuja on Sunday. Dan-Musa highlighted that it would be inaccurate to view the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi as an act against the Northern region, as it was in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Assembly.
The group emphasized the importance of interpreting the actions of the Senate President within the framework of the National Assembly’s Standing Orders. Dan-Musa urged political leaders in Northern Nigeria to prioritize national interests and unity, emphasizing the need for solidarity with Akpabio for the greater good of the nation.
The statement from NYEGA also acknowledged Akpabio’s efforts towards promoting national cohesion and encouraged Northern senators to rally around him, citing previous support from Southern senators for Senator Ahmed Lawan during his tenure as Senate President. The group called for a departure from traditional political methods and urged for a new political consciousness that aligns with international standards.
In response to criticisms and demands for Akpabio’s resignation or removal, Francis Okoye, a chieftain of the APC, expressed approval for the suspension of Bauchi Central Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi. Okoye voiced solidarity with Senate leader Godswill Akpabio and defended Akpabio against allegations of wrongdoing, insisting that there is no valid reason for him to resign as Senate President.
The call for Northern senators to back Akpabio and refrain from pushing for the appointment of another Muslim as Senate President signifies a shift in political dynamics and a push for unity and continuity in leadership. The support for Akpabio from various quarters highlights the complexities of political maneuvering within the Nigerian Senate and the importance of maintaining stability and cohesion in the face of challenges.
Overall, the NYEGA’s appeal for support for Akpabio reflects a broader narrative of unity and collaboration among political leaders in Northern Nigeria, with an emphasis on national interests and the promotion of a unified front for the advancement of the nation. The group’s stance underscores the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics and the delicate balance of power and influence within the Senate.
