The tragic death of a 17-year-old apprentice, Ojibe Chibueze, in Lagos has shocked the community. The young boy reportedly took his own life after being accused of stealing N100,000 from his boss. The incident was reported by Chibueze’s sister, Cynthia, who found her brother’s body at the Ojibo bus stop in the Epe area of Lagos.

According to Cynthia, Chibueze returned from work on Tuesday and took some money before leaving the house. She later received a call informing her that his body was found at the bus stop with a bottle of Snipper beside him. The police in Lagos, led by SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the tragic incident on Wednesday, March 14.

The details of the case revealed that Cynthia reported the incident at the police station in Ajah. She recounted how her brother had returned from work the previous day and went out with some money. Later, his boss accused him of stealing N100,000 from the shop, which led to the tragic turn of events.

The police investigation discovered that Chibueze’s lifeless body was found at the Abijo bus stop in Ajah, Ibeju Lekki local government area of Lagos. He was lying beside a bottle of Snipper, indicating that he may have consumed the poisonous substance to end his life. The police described the scene as heartbreaking, with foam coming out of his mouth and nostrils.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the mental health challenges that many young people face, especially in high-pressure environments like apprenticeships. The pressure to succeed, coupled with the fear of facing consequences for mistakes, can lead to extreme actions like the one taken by Chibueze.

In a separate development, President Bola Tinubu appointed former Lagos commissioner Dayo Mobereola as the new Director-General of NIMASA. This appointment followed the retirement of the previous appointee, Bashir Jamoh. Mobereola’s long-standing experience in public service, particularly in Lagos state, makes him a suitable candidate for the role.

The untimely death of Ojibe Chibueze serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support in our society. It is crucial for individuals facing challenges to seek help and for employers to create a supportive work environment for their employees, especially young apprentices who may be vulnerable to stress and pressure. May Chibueze’s soul rest in peace, and may his tragic story serve as a wake-up call for us all to prioritize mental well-being in our communities.
