The Plateau state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was thrown into mourning following the assassination of Sylvanus Namang, the state’s publicity secretary, by some hoodlums on Sunday morning. Namang was reportedly gunned down outside his hotel room in Pankshin town of Pankshin local government area where he had traveled to for a burial from Saturday. The armed attack led to his tragic death, leaving the party in shock and devastation over the loss of a key member.

According to an anonymous chieftain of the APC, the party confirmed Namang’s death and stated that an official statement would be released about the tragic incident. The late Namang was described as a dedicated member and a loyal ally who was committed to the party’s growth at both the grassroots and state levels.

The heinous attack took place in front of his hotel room, where some hoodlums opened gunfire at him on Sunday, February 18. He had left home on Saturday to attend a burial, and unfortunately, these nefarious hoodlums ended his life the following day. Namang’s untimely death has sent shockwaves across the state and within political circles, leaving the APC grappling with the devastating loss of a prominent and influential member.

Plateau state has long been grappling with the menace of insecurity, largely due to the deep-seated tribal and religious differences that have often triggered political and tribal crises. This assassination has brought to light the urgency for the state government to address the prevailing issues of insecurity within the region and formulate strategies to foster harmony and peace among its residents.

In addition to the prevailing issues of insecurity, the state recently faced political upheaval following the reinstatement of Governor Caleb Mutfwang by the Supreme Court. This culminated in a political crisis, with the People’s Democratic Party, specifically the lawmakers who were earlier sacked, agitating for justice and seeking the vacating of seats by APC lawmakers favored by the judgment.

This tragic incident has unveiled the fragility of political, tribal, and religious peace in the state and raised concerns about the safety and security of public officials, party members, and the citizens in the community. The Plateau state government and relevant authorities must prioritize the restoration of peace through diplomatic measures, conflict resolution, and the enhancement of security infrastructure to curb the ongoing insecurity in the region.

The untimely death of Namang has not only sent shockwaves through the political landscape in Plateau state, but it has also underscored the importance of fostering unity, peace, and security in the wake of persistent tribal and political tensions. The APC has suffered an immeasurable loss and must come together to honor the legacy of Namang, while also addressing the root causes of insecurity within the region. The tragedy has prompted a somber reflection on the urgent need for effective security measures and conflict resolution strategies to foster lasting peace and stability within the state.
