The Abuja chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the recent appointments made by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The leaders of the APC in Abuja accused Wike of neglecting party members in his appointments to key positions within the FCT civil service commission, critical agencies, and other roles. This move by Wike, appointing non-party members to these positions, has sparked outrage among APC members in the FCT.
The APC leaders in the FCT, led by Convener Comrade Abdulwahab Ekekhide, have called for immediate action to address what they perceive as bias against their party and the neglect of its interests. Ekekhide raised concerns about the impact of Wike’s actions on the party’s strength and presence in the FCT, highlighting the significant role APC members played in electing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He warned that failure to address these issues could lead to a decline in party support and even electoral defeat in future elections.
The APC leaders have called on President Tinubu to intervene and urge Minister Wike to reconsider his approach and empower the party. They emphasized the need for APC members who have actively supported the party to be considered for key positions within the FCT. The lack of representation for party members in crucial roles within the FCT administration could jeopardize the party’s performance in upcoming elections.
The Convener also expressed disappointment over the numerous appointments made by Minister Wike since taking office, particularly the selection of non-FCT residents for important positions within FCT Secretariats and Agencies. The recent appointment of Honorable Felix Obuah, a former State Chairman of the PDP in Rivers State, as the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) was cited as an example of appointing individuals not familiar with FCT affairs.
In a statement, the APC leaders emphasized that there are capable party members in the FCT who have the experience and qualifications to hold political office at both the local and national level. They rejected the notion of “Monkey dey Work, Baboon dey Chop,” asserting that party members deserve fair representation in government appointments.
Comrade Abdulwahab Ekekhide warned that continuing to overlook APC members in the FCT could lead to electoral setbacks in future elections, including the upcoming Area Council election. Despite rumors of Wike’s potential switch to the ruling APC, he clarified his allegiance to the PDP while expressing support for President Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
In conclusion, the APC leaders in the FCT are calling for fair and inclusive government appointments that reflect the contributions and capabilities of party members. They are urging Minister Wike to reconsider his approach and ensure that APC members are adequately represented in key positions within the FCT administration to strengthen the party’s presence and performance in future elections.
