The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, recently spoke out about what he perceives as a lack of governance under Governor Siminilaye Fubara’s leadership in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government. Okocha expressed concern about the state of affairs in Rivers and warned that the state cannot afford to be run by what he described as a clueless governor.
According to Okocha, there has been a noticeable absence of initiatives from the Rivers State Government to address the negative impacts of the economic downturn in Nigeria. He criticized Governor Fubara for not taking steps to promote industrialization and food security in the state, unlike other state governors who are actively working towards these goals.
Okocha emphasized the need for Governor Fubara to think outside the box and collaborate with the Federal Government to find solutions to the economic challenges facing the country. He cited examples of governors from other states, such as Niger, Borno, Anambra, and Lagos, who have taken proactive measures to support their people during these difficult times.
The APC Chairman challenged Governor Fubara to follow the lead of his counterparts in other states by publicly addressing the press and explaining his policies and plans for economic recovery. He also criticized the governor for allegedly dehumanizing elderly citizens and prioritizing ostentatious displays of support over meaningful action.
Okocha pointed out that Governor Fubara’s failure to present the 2024 budget to the Rivers State House of Assembly, as agreed in a Peace Proclamation, is a violation of protocol and demonstrates a lack of commitment to governance. He warned that the State Assembly would hold the governor accountable for his actions and ensure proper checks and balances are in place.
In conclusion, Okocha asserted that there is hope for Nigeria to overcome its economic challenges, thanks to efforts by leaders like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. However, he urged Governor Fubara to reevaluate his approach to governance and prioritize the welfare of the people of Rivers State. Otherwise, Okocha warned, the governor may face consequences and potential disgrace if he continues down the current path.
