The Rt. Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, Bishop of Ibadan North Diocese (Anglican Communion), expressed deep concern on Tuesday about the unparalleled hardship, increasing insecurity, poverty, and unemployment in Nigeria since President Bola Tinubu took office on May 29. Bishop Aladekugbe made this appeal during his homily at the commendation service for the late governor Rotimi Akeredolu at All Saints Church, Jericho, Ibadan.
In his address, Bishop Aladekugbe described the current state of Nigerians as frustrated, hungry, and angry. He urged all tiers of government to urgently address the rising prices of food items, widespread insecurities, and economic calamities.
Referring to the President’s promises during his campaign, Bishop Aladekugbe pointed out that Nigerians have been in pain for the past nine months instead of experiencing the relief that was pledged. He expressed bewilderment at the socioeconomic reforms being implemented by the current federal government, stating that these reforms had caused unprecedented hardship for the people.
The bishop appealed to the federal government and security agencies to intensify their efforts in order to prevent further economic and security challenges in the country. He emphasized the need for the government to intervene in the escalating prices of food and the overall wellbeing of the nation.
Paying tribute to the late Governor Akeredolu, Bishop Aladekugbe acknowledged him as a courageous, tenacious, humorous, philanthropic, talented singer, and a devout Anglican. He praised Akeredolu’s contributions, particularly his role in establishing Amotekun and his impact as the governor of Ondo State.
The commendation service also included prayers for the deceased and musical performances by some of Akeredolu’s old associates. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, former governors Kayode Fayemi and Donald Duke, and other prominent figures in society.
In her remarks on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State SSG described the late Akeredolu as sincere, factual, and unafraid to speak his mind. Similarly, a long-time friend of Akeredolu, Mr. Ayodele Adigun, lamented the loss of someone who was loyal, dependable, and had a great sense of humor.
Former Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Olorunnimbe Mamora, also paid tribute to Akeredolu, describing him as a great man by any standard and someone who had served the community, state, and the church with dedication and loyalty.
Bishop Aladekugbe concluded by encouraging the Akeredolu family, friends, and associates to find solace in the fact that the late governor had attained a permanent place of rest in heaven. He emphasized the importance of drawing closer to God through fasting and prayers during the Lenten season, seeking divine intervention to deliver the country from its current challenges.
