The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. General Yushau Ahmed, was recently honored with the prestigious title of “Dekora” (meaning the strength of the people) by the traditional ruler of Umuawulu community in Anambra State, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Joe Egwuonwu. The conferment ceremony took place at the State NYSC Orientation Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu during the cultural carnival organized for the 2024 Batch “A” Stream 1 Corps Members.
During the ceremony, Igwe Egwuonwu expressed his pleasure at having the DG visit the community and accept the traditional honor. He welcomed Brig. General Yushau Ahmed as a full member of the Igwe in the Council of Umuawulu Kingdom and assured him of their continued support for the unity and progress of Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole. The Monarch, on behalf of Umuawulu community, Anambra NYSC family, and the country, conferred upon the DG the Chieftaincy title of Dekora 1 of Umuawulu Kingdom, and prayed for God’s guidance and upliftment for him.
In response, the DG emphasized the importance of Corps Members respecting the customs, norms, and traditions of their host communities. He highlighted the symbolism of the Chieftaincy title as a representation of unity among all Nigerians, regardless of differences in tribe, ethnicity, or religious beliefs. Brig. General Yushau Ahmed expressed his gratitude for the honor and reiterated the NYSC’s commitment to collaborating with state governors on skill acquisition programs to equip Corps Members with valuable skills for self-reliance after their service year.
