Al-Muhibbah Open University held its inaugural matriculation ceremony in Abuja, welcoming 105 students across three faculties and 14 programs. The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, emphasized the importance of open distance learning education, noting the need for private institutions to supplement government efforts in providing quality education to a large pool of students.
Mamman highlighted the growing demand for tertiary education in Nigeria, stating that the government alone cannot meet these demands. He called for quality assurance mechanisms to be put in place by regulatory agencies like the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure that open universities deliver approved, quality programs.
The minister stressed the importance of providing relevant and competitive qualifications that equip students with the skills needed for employment or entrepreneurship. He congratulated the new students and urged them to adhere to the university’s regulations and contribute responsibly to the institution.
Chancellor Aisha Bala Muhammad expressed her commitment to providing opportunities for Nigerian women and the less privileged to access higher education at Al-Muhibbah Open University. She emphasized the institution’s adherence to global best practices in education and thanked the NUC for its confidence in the university’s management.
The university’s admissions process aims to provide quality, affordable, and accessible education while upholding established standards and collaborating with government and non-governmental organizations. Muhammad reminded students to obey the university’s laws and demonstrate good conduct, warning of consequences for violating rules.
In a goodwill message, JAMB Registrar Ishaq Oloyede congratulated the chancellor on the university’s milestone and urged adherence to rules and regulations. NUC Acting Executive Secretary Chris Maiyaki commended the university for its commitment to enhancing educational access and broadening equity. Maiyaki highlighted the NUC’s efforts to review, update, and reengineer university curriculum to meet current needs.
The NUC recently released guidelines for transnational education and open distance learning, providing opportunities for foreign universities to collaborate with Nigerian institutions. Al-Muhibbah Open University is one of the 37 private universities licensed by the NUC to offer open and distance learning programs, including Business Administration, Economics, Cyber Security, and Healthcare Management.
Dignitaries including the Bauchi State governor, the Managing Director of NAN, and the Emir of Bwari attended the matriculation ceremony. The university looks forward to providing quality education that meets the needs of students and contributes to the development of Nigeria’s educational sector.
