The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly recently passed a resolution urging Gov. Umo Eno to enforce the ban on motorcyclists operating on restricted routes in Uyo Metropolis. This decision was made after a motion was brought before the house by Mr Uwem Imo-Ita, the member representing Mkpat Enin state constituency, and seconded by Mr Lawrence Udoide, the member representing the Ini state constituency.

Imo-Ita expressed his displeasure at the nonchalant attitude of motorcyclists who disobey the ban by using unauthorized routes in broad daylight. He also highlighted the issue of law enforcement personnel being among the violators, undermining the rule of law. He called on the House to support the motion for the arrest and prosecution of offenders as a deterrent to others.

Imo-Ita further urged for the involvement of the Ethical and Attitudinal Re-Orientation Commission (EARCOM) in educating the public about the seriousness of the offense. Members of the House echoed their support for the motion and emphasized the need for the governor to direct relevant authorities to enforce the ban.

The Speaker, Mr Udeme Otong, instructed the Clerk, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok, to relay the resolution to the Governor and issue directives to appropriate authorities for the enforcement of the ban. The aim is to curb the flagrant abuse of the law and ensure compliance with the restrictions on motorcyclists in Uyo Metropolis.

This resolution marks a crucial step towards maintaining order and safety on the roads in Uyo Metropolis. The House of Assembly’s decision reflects their commitment to upholding the law and protecting the welfare of residents. It sends a clear message to violators that their actions will not be tolerated and that the law will be enforced to maintain the integrity of the city.

The issue of motorcyclists operating on restricted routes is a significant concern that poses risks to both the riders and other road users. By reactivating the ban and intensifying awareness campaigns, the government aims to create a safer environment for all residents. The enforcement of this ban will not only enhance road safety but also promote compliance with existing regulations.

In conclusion, the resolution passed by the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly is a proactive step towards addressing the issue of unauthorized motorcyclists in Uyo Metropolis. It demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order, protecting public safety, and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic in the city. By working together with relevant authorities and agencies, the enforcement of this ban will contribute to a more secure and organized transportation system in Uyo Metropolis.
