The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has found himself at the centre of controversy, with allegations of an imminent political crisis in his home state of Akwa Ibom. There are claims that Akpabio is allegedly plotting to forcefully control the political powerhouse of the state and has disrespected the former governor of the state, Obong Victor Attah. It has been posited that Akpabio’s ambitious plan to take over the state forcefully is both impractical and a mere fantasy.

Akpabio, who is the former Minister of Niger Delta, has faced criticism for his attacks on Obong Victor Attah and other Akwa-Ibom leaders. Critics have urged him to issue a sincere and unreserved apology for his actions. Moreover, the Akwa Ibom Professionals have reprimanded Akpabio for his recent unjustified outbursts and have advised him to recognize that the people of Akwa Ibom State have embraced a path of unity, progress, and development under the current leadership of Governor Umo Eno.

Moreover, the National Coordinator of an organization issued a statement in Abuja strongly criticizing Akpabio, condemning him for belittling and criticizing former Governor Victor Attah. He also criticized Akpabio’s confident assertion that he would seize control of Akwa Ibom State in 2027, dismissing it as an empty boast. The group accused Senator Akpabio of employing hate speech and spreading false claims to sow division among communities, traditional leaders, religious figures, and youth groups, attempting to create unrest and undermine the current administration in the state for his self-serving agenda.

In addition, Akpabio and some senators received the 2023 governorship candidate of the YPP in Akwa Ibom state, Bassey Albert, into the APC. The defection occurred in Akpabio’s hometown, Ukana, Essien Udim local government area of Akwa Ibom.

In summary, the controversy surrounding Akpabio and his alleged political ambitions has prompted criticism from various stakeholders, with warnings against his alleged intentions to forcefully control Akwa Ibom state. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold in the coming days and weeks.
