Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo state has announced that Thursday, 22nd, and Friday, 23rd of February 2024 will be public holidays in the State. This announcement was made in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan. The reason for this holiday is in honor of the former Governor of the State, late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, who passed away in December.

Adeniyan stated that the two work-free days are intended to allow the people of the State to participate in the burial activities of the former Governor. The burial activities commenced on Thursday, February 21st and will continue as follows:

– Wednesday, February 21: Traditional Rites in Owo at 9am till 4pm, Special Court Session at Court 1, Ondo State High Court Headquarters in Akure at 10am, Lying in State and Commendation Service at Akure Township Stadium at 1pm, and Evening of Tributes at St Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo between 4pm and 7pm.

– Thursday, February 22 (Public holiday): Service of Songs at St Andrews Cathedral, Imola Street, Owo at 4pm, Wake-Keep at Maranatha Villa, Owo at 8pm, and candlelight Procession & World Gyration by the Kegites Club from 8pm till Dawn.

– Friday, February 23 (Public holiday): Funeral Service at St Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo at 10am, interment at the burial site in Owo (Strictly for immediate family), and Reception at Mydas Hotel and Resort, Ikare Road, Owo by 1pm.

– Saturday, February 24, 2024: Akeredolu Memorial Friendly football match at Akure Township Stadium, Akure at 3 pm.

– Sunday, February 25, 2024: Thanksgiving Service at St Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo at 10 am.

It is important to note that the public holidays on Thursday and Friday are specifically for the people of Ondo State to have the opportunity to be part of the events dedicated to honoring the former Governor. The schedule of activities includes traditional rites, court sessions, lying in state, and various church services and ceremonies.

The burial activities aim to celebrate the life and achievements of the late Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, and the public holidays will provide the community with the time to pay their respects and participate in the funeral events.

The Governor’s declaration of public holidays facilitates the involvement of the people of Ondo State in the mourning and celebration of the former Governor’s life, allowing them to come together as a community to honor his memory.
