Following allegations of violent attacks by hired political thugs during the visit of President Bola Tinubu to Ondo state, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has taken swift action by ordering an investigation and arrest of those responsible for the attacks. The governor expressed his disapproval of the destruction of campaign billboards by the hoodlums and made it clear that his administration will not condone any form of violence that could threaten the peace in the state. He instructed law enforcement agencies to identify, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators of the billboard destruction and violent activities.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the governor condemned the destruction of billboards and attacks on political rivals during the President’s visit. The statement emphasized the governor’s commitment to maintaining peace and tranquility in the state and reiterated that any political campaign that disrupts the peace will face decisive action from law enforcement.
The governor clarified that neither he nor the government of Ondo State were involved in the reported activities attributed to political thugs during the President’s visit. He called on law enforcement agencies to take swift action in arresting and prosecuting anyone found engaging in violent activities. The governor also urged politicians and their supporters to conduct issue-based campaigns and avoid spreading falsehoods, inciting the public, or intimidating opponents.
Aspirants from the All Progressives Congress (APC) raised concerns that the alleged attacks were orchestrated by hired political thugs and members of the NURTW. Campaign billboards were reportedly destroyed, and party members aligned with other aspirants were targeted and injured. Supporters wearing apparel representing other aspirants were also attacked, turning what was supposed to be a celebration of the President’s visit into a scene of violence.
The incident drew attention from the press, including the Nigerian Tribune, highlighting the need for accountability and peaceful political campaigns in the state. Governor Aiyedatiwa’s swift response to the violence demonstrates his commitment to upholding law and order and promoting a peaceful political environment in Ondo State.
Moving forward, it is imperative for all political actors to prioritize dialogue, respect for the rule of law, and peaceful coexistence in the conduct of campaigns and electoral processes. The governor’s call for issue-based campaigns and non-violent actions serves as a reminder to all stakeholders of the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the political landscape. As the investigation unfolds and those responsible are brought to justice, it is essential to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure that political activities are conducted in a manner that upholds the values of peace, integrity, and respect for all individuals.
