A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Sunny Onuesoke, has offered a rebuttal to Pastor E.A. Adeboye’s recent comments about Nigeria’s problems being spiritual in nature. Onuesoke, a prominent member of the PDP and a former contender for the governorship position in Delta State, believes that Nigeria’s challenges stem from economic issues rather than spiritual ones. He stated that Nigeria’s problem isn’t spiritual but physical, and that stern action from its leaders is required.

In response to comments made by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Onuesoke has emphasized the need for pragmatic solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, as opposed to solely relying on spirituality. While Pastor Adeboye suggested that Nigeria’s problems are spiritual, Onuesoke contended that relying solely on spirituality to address economic issues is futile. He highlighted that if spirituality were practical in wealth creation, Nigeria would have been among the wealthiest nations, alongside Yemen, Afghanistan, Jamaica, and Haiti. He emphasized that in the modern world, success is more aligned with advancements in science and technology rather than prayers.

Onuesoko also pointed out that in Europe, churches are folding up due to lack of churchgoers, but the countries are moving on due to the infrastructures and social securities that are in place. He stressed that no single citizen in these countries goes to bed with an empty stomach or lacks medical care, including registered asylum seekers. This demonstrates that effective leadership and infrastructure are more pivotal to a country’s success than spirituality alone.

Onuesoke further highlighted that Nigeria possesses the necessary resources to thrive, attributing its struggles to its leaders’ negligence and self-interest and its citizens’ apathy towards diversifying the economy and combating corruption. He identified public officials, religious leaders, and politicians as major contributors to Nigeria’s challenges, emphasizing that there is no spiritual aspect to the country’s problems. He expressed concern about Nigeria’s current trajectory, observing that the success seen in the Western world isn’t solely due to their religious practices but is rather the presence of functional systems driven by sincere and focused leadership. In contrast, despite numerous inquiries, Nigeria faces the opposite scenario, with political leaders embezzling funds without consequence.

Onuesoke called for honest leadership, criticizing religious leaders, public officials, and politicians for causing Nigeria’s challenges. He observed that there is a need for transformational leaders who can tackle the country’s economic and social issues. He also warned of potential divine repercussions if the situation worsens.

In addition to Onuesoke’s rebuttal, the media has picked up on widespread criticism of Pastor Adeboye’s comments across social media. Fast-rising rapper Odumodublvck lashed out at Christians who recently spoke against the preacher’s words, stating that Muslims do not abuse their clerics in the same harsh manner that Christians do. This reflects the diverse perspectives and responses to Pastor Adeboye’s spiritual assessment of Nigeria’s problems.

As Nigeria grapples with its economic and social challenges, the diverging opinions on the root causes of these issues reflect the complexities of solving the country’s problems. However, one thing remains clear – there is a need for practical and effective leadership to address Nigeria’s challenges, whether they are spiritual, economic, or social in nature.
