The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has recently issued a cautionary message to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the upcoming Labour Party (LP) National Convention scheduled for March 27, 2024. The NLC expressed its concern in a formal letter addressed to the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu.

In the letter prepared by the NLC’s legal representatives, Falana and Falana’s Chambers, dated March 22, 2024, the NLC accused the Chairman of the LP, Julius Abure, and his associates of planning an illegal convention in direct defiance of court orders. The NLC highlighted the fact that previous court rulings had declared the LP’s status and mandated inclusive conventions, making the planned national convention illegal.

The NLC, through a letter signed by Marshal Abubakar, warned of potential legal action if INEC chose to proceed with validating the illegal convention. The letter, titled “Request To Desist From Validating The Illegal Labour Party National Convention Scheduled For March 27, 2024,” emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting court orders.

The NLC’s letter specifically referenced past court cases, including Suit no. FHC/ABJ/CS/866/2014 and Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/491/2021, where judgments and injunctions were issued regarding the LP’s operations and leadership. These legal precedents served as the basis for the NLC’s request for INEC to refrain from endorsing the planned national convention.

The NLC’s letter also highlighted a Federal High Court ruling on July 23, 2021, that ordered parties to maintain the status quo pending further legal proceedings. This ruling further reinforced the NLC’s argument against the legality of the upcoming convention and urged INEC to uphold the principles of justice and the rule of law.

In conclusion, the NLC urged INEC to prevent any officials from participating in the unauthorized convention and warned of potential contempt proceedings if their demands were not met. The NLC’s message emphasized the importance of respecting court decisions and ensuring transparent and lawful processes within the political sphere.

Overall, the NLC’s caution to INEC regarding the LP National Convention serves as a reminder of the essential role that regulatory bodies play in upholding legal standards and ensuring the integrity of electoral processes. The NLC’s commitment to enforcing the rule of law and promoting transparency in political activities demonstrates its dedication to upholding democratic values in Nigeria.
