The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, announced that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ART) project is nearing completion, with 97 percent of the work already done. Wike made this statement following an inspection of the project from the Metro Station in Central Area to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. He expressed his excitement about the progress of the project, describing it as a “dream come true.”
During the inspection, Wike revealed that the project is expected to be ready for inauguration in May to coincide with the one-year anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s tenure. Tinubu has approved a schedule for the inauguration of various projects to mark his first year in office, including the Abuja Light Rail system. Wike confirmed that the project is almost complete, with all necessary work being carried out to ensure that the May deadline is met.
The minister emphasized the importance of the project in boosting the economy and expressed his belief that it is a key project that President Tinubu would be interested in inaugurating. He stated, “For me, it is a dream come true, and we are happy that after all said and done, the metro line will be put to use for Nigerians, come May 29.”
During the inspection, Wike took a 30-minute ride on the train from the Metro Station to the Airport and noted the convenience and efficiency of using the train as opposed to vehicles to reach the airport. He commended the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), for their work and expressed satisfaction with the renovations being carried out on the stations.
Regarding the extension of the rail lines to high traffic areas, Wike mentioned that it is currently under consideration, but no commitments have been made yet due to financial implications. He acknowledged the importance of linking areas like Nyanya and stated that discussions with the contractor will determine the feasibility of such extensions in the future.
Additionally, the FCT Administration plans to build three terminals for the road transportation system in the territory to address security concerns related to “one chance” criminals. Wike revealed that the FCTA road transport system is set to be launched in May, ensuring that residents no longer have to take risks by boarding vehicles operated by unfamiliar individuals.
In conclusion, the progress of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit project signifies significant development for the FCT, with plans in place to enhance transportation infrastructure and address security issues in the region. The completion of the project will mark a milestone in improving accessibility and connectivity for residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
