Rumors of former presidential hopeful Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and his supporters potentially joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been circulating online. Kwankwaso, a former minister, senator, and governor, leads the Kwankwasiyya movement, which has a strong following in Nigeria’s northwest geopolitical zone. The possibility of Kwankwaso joining the APC was met with enthusiasm from Adamu Garba, a former presidential aspirant of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and a chieftain of the APC.
Garba expressed his excitement about the prospect of the Kwankwasiyya movement switching to the APC, describing it as “a great catch.” A photo of Kwankwaso and Bisi Akande, a key ally of President Bola Tinubu, went viral, suggesting a potential transition. Kwankwaso’s previous presidential run under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) positioned him as an influential political figure in Nigeria.
Adamu Garba’s tweet on the matter received attention, and he expressed optimism about the potential shift. He highlighted that Kwankwaso’s political movement switching back to the APC would be a significant move. Although Kwankwaso is not currently affiliated with the APC, his amicable relationship with President Bola Tinubu indicates the possibility of a transition.
Furthermore, Bashir Ahmad, a former special assistant on digital communications to ex-President Muhammad Buhari, hinted at Kwankwaso’s potential defection to the APC. Ahmad suggested that the APC would welcome Kwankwaso, emphasizing the impact the prominent northern politician could have within the party.
The Kwankwasiyya movement’s potential move to the APC comes after the group emerged fourth in the 2023 presidential election, securing 1,496,687 votes. The movement’s strong presence in Kano, a state governed by the NNPP, has been instrumental in solidifying Kwankwaso’s political influence.
The excitement surrounding the possibility of Kwankwaso joining the APC is indicative of the significant impact his transition could have on the Nigerian political landscape. As these rumors continue to gain traction, the potential shift of the Kwankwasiyya movement to the APC remains a topic of keen interest and speculation.
