Twenty-three inmates at the Enugu Custodial Centre achieved a significant milestone by obtaining Masters, first degree, and Post Graduate Diploma from the National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, on Saturday. Among the 23, five received Master’s degrees, 17 received their first degrees, and one obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma. These inmates successfully completed their studies at NOUN’s study center within four or five years while being held at the custodial facility.

The State Coordinator of NOUN, Nigerian Correctional Service, Jennifer Nwonyi, commended the graduates for their determination and resilience in attaining such academic achievements. She expressed her joy and gratitude to see these students successfully complete their studies despite the challenges they faced while being incarcerated.

The degrees and diploma were presented to the graduates at a virtual convocation held at the Enugu Custodial Centre. This event marked a significant accomplishment for the inmates and highlighted the transformative power of education.

The graduates were praised for overcoming psychological and academic challenges to complete their studies. Ms. Nwonyi congratulated the graduates and wished them success in overcoming future obstacles as they transition from the custodial center to the outside world.

During the ceremony, Sunday Oyakhire, deputy controller of corrections in charge of Enugu Maximum Custodial Centre, expressed his gratitude to NOUN for organizing the courses and providing facilitators to support the inmates’ education. He acknowledged the impact of education on empowering individuals and preparing them for a better future.

Arinzechukwu Onovo, the correctional center’s Desk Officer for NOUN programs, urged the graduates to continue seeking knowledge as it is essential for personal growth and development. He highlighted the importance of education in unlocking potential and creating opportunities for a brighter future.

The correctional facility has seen an increase in the number of graduates from NOUN courses, indicating the success of the educational reform programs implemented in partnership with NOUN. Mr. Onovo emphasized the facility’s commitment to providing free educational opportunities to inmates and encouraged more individuals to take advantage of these programs.

Overall, this achievement by the 23 inmates reflects their determination, hard work, and commitment to education. It serves as a testament to the transformative power of learning and the positive impact it can have on individuals’ lives. The collaboration between NOUN and the custodial facility has provided a valuable opportunity for inmates to acquire knowledge, skills, and qualifications that will support their reintegration into society.
