Hon. Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), believes that the PDP can defeat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections without merging with other parties. Showunmi, who previously contested the governorship in Ogun state, emphasized that the ruling party’s 2015 coalition method might not work for the opposition in 2027.
In an interview published by Punch, Showunmi argued that the APC’s successful strategy in 2015 does not guarantee similar success in 2027. The PDP can secure electoral victory, according to Showunmi, by focusing on internal reform rather than pursuing a coalition with other parties. He expressed confidence that implementing internal reforms would enable the PDP to comfortably defeat the ruling party.
Showunmi criticized the idea of a coalition, describing it as a lazy and unimaginative approach to unseating the APC. He emphasized that the political parties being considered for a merger also have contenders who aspire to become president. Convinving these contenders to abandon their presidential ambitions, according to Showunmi, would be challenging.
Moreover, Showunmi revealed his interest in the chairmanship seat of the PDP and called for resolving internal differences and reforming the party to effectively compete and win against the APC.
In another development, Showunmi visited ex-President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Daura, Katsina state. However, this visit sparked criticism from PDP supporters, who accused him of planning to defect.
The PDP chieftain’s remarks and actions indicate a commitment to internal party reform as a viable path to securing electoral victory without merging with other political parties. His confidence in the PDP’s ability to defeat the APC reflects a bold determination to reform and strengthen the opposition party.
