The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 17 political parties have put forward candidates for the upcoming Edo governorship election on September 21. This was confirmed in a statement released by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, based in Abuja.

Mr. Olumekun disclosed that all 17 parties successfully submitted their candidates’ nomination forms for the election before the 6 p.m. deadline on March 24, after which the dedicated portal automatically closed down. The candidates’ personal details and those of their running mates will be made public by INEC on March 30, in accordance with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

According to Mr. Olumekun, the commission will publish the personal particulars by displaying copies of Form EC9, including all academic credentials and other documents submitted by each candidate, at the state headquarters and the 18 local government offices across Edo. This transparency is essential for ensuring the integrity of the election process.

In his appeal to Nigerians, Mr. Olumekun urged citizens to carefully scrutinize the documents once they are published. He emphasized that any aspirant who took part in their party primaries and has legitimate concerns about the candidate’s information being falsified can challenge the nomination. Such challenges can be pursued in a Federal High Court, as stipulated in Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

It is crucial for the electoral process to be conducted with the highest level of credibility and transparency to uphold democracy and ensure that the voice of the people is properly represented. By providing ample opportunity for scrutiny and verification of candidates’ information, INEC is taking important steps to maintain the integrity of the election.

As the preparations for the Edo governorship election continue, the participation of multiple political parties and the thorough vetting process initiated by INEC are positive indicators for a democratic and fair electoral process. It is now up to the voters and stakeholders in Edo to engage actively and responsibly in the electoral process to ensure a successful and legitimate outcome on September 21.

In conclusion, the involvement of 17 political parties in the Edo governorship election demonstrates a diverse and competitive political landscape in the state. With the upcoming publication of candidates’ personal particulars, the stage is set for a transparent and accountable electoral process that upholds the principles of democracy and fairness.
