The 19th edition of the Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games is set to kick off in Abuja on Sunday, 21 April, with over 1,500 athletes from 13 companies in the Nigerian oil and gas sector participating in the event. This edition of the Games is special as it marks only the second time it will be held in Abuja since its inception, with expectations of it being the most competitive ever.

Companies participating in the week-long event include NNPC, Shell, Chevron, Total Energies, PTI, SEPLAT, NCDMB, NLNG, OANDO, NMDPRA, ExxonMobil NUPRC, and ARADEL. The athletes will compete in various sports, including athletics, golf, football, basketball, 8-ball pool, swimming, table tennis, tennis, chess, volleyball, squash, and badminton.

Mrs. Ifeyinwa Mojo-eyes, the Chairperson of the Main Organising Committee, highlighted the significance of the games in promoting wellness and productivity among industry players. She emphasized the importance of a healthy workforce, which contributes to a healthier and more productive nation while reducing medical expenses and enhancing overall productivity.

The theme of this year’s event is “Empower Wellness, Ignite Productivity,” aligning with the goal of fostering a healthy and connected community within the oil and gas sector. The event will feature a diverse range of sports activities aimed at promoting physical fitness and teamwork among participants.

The opening ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, 21 April, will be declared open by the Chief Host and Group Managing Director of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The event will be attended by dignitaries, including the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, the FCT Minister, Neysom Wike, and officials from the Petroleum Ministry.

On the final day of the Games, spectators can look forward to exciting competitions, including the men’s and women’s 100 meters dash, the 4×100 relay race, and the football final between NCDMB and NLNG. Tight security measures will be in place to ensure the safety of both athletes and spectators throughout the event.
