Change is one of the few constants in life, and not everyone can easily adapt to it when it comes. As the Entebbe Golf Club (EGC) Match-play Series makes its return, there will be both positive and negative disruptions to the usual routine.
Season VIII of the championship welcomes a new title sponsor in Stanbic Bank, taking over from Uganda Breweries Limited brand Singleton, which sponsored the past seven seasons. This change in sponsorship is likely to bring new faces to the field, as players gear up to compete over seven rounds of the four-ball better-ball knockout competition.
The qualifying round at the par-71 course on Saturday will provide an opportunity for new pairings to showcase their skills and earn a spot in the competition. Some familiar pairings may not be able to participate due to scheduling conflicts with other major events happening across different clubs.
With over 200 players expected to participate, the best 64 pairings will advance to the first round scheduled for April 16. Reigning champions Richard Mucunguzi and Saidi Kirarira have a wildcard entry, but they also have the option to enter the qualifier if they choose to.
Older pairings like brothers Micheal Sekadde and Ceaser Barole are eager to gain momentum in the qualifier. “We are back stronger and ready to face the field,” said Barole. EGC captain Serwano Walusimbi, who took third place last year, is undecided about his participation in the main draw but is determined to give it his all if he decides to compete.
The main competition promises a fresh field of players, with a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser up for grabs as a hole-in-one prize on selected par-3 Holes. The excitement surrounding the return of the Stanbic Entebbe Match-play Golf Series is palpable, with a lineup of sponsors, including Stanbic Bank, DStv for business, Uganda Airlines, and Cfao Motors.
The tournament schedule includes rounds one through three and the quarterfinals leading up to the finals. The Season VII Singleton Challenge saw Richard Mucunguzi and Saidi Kirarira emerge victorious, with Serwano Walusimbi and Peter Magona clinching third place after a fierce battle.
As the EGC Match-play Challenge continues its legacy of showcasing top golfing talent, players and fans alike can look forward to an exciting and competitive season ahead. The series’ rich history of winners and memorable moments highlight the depth of talent and passion for the sport within the golfing community.
