On March 13, 2024, in Port Sudan, the newly formed National Forces Coordination (NFC), under the leadership of Sovereign Council Deputy Chairman Malik Agar, made an important announcement. They revealed plans to sign a political declaration with the Sudanese military in an effort to address the ongoing political crisis that has been exacerbated by the conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and to establish a transitional government.

This announcement from the NFC comes after the Coordination of Civil Democratic Forces (Taqaddum) reached an agreement with the RSF in early January 2023. The aim of this move is to bring stability to the region and pave the way for a peaceful transition of power.

The Sovereign Council is supportive of the NFC’s initiative, and on Wednesday, Lt Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who serves as the head of the Sovereign Council and also as the army commander-in-chief, held a meeting with Agar and other NFC leaders. During this meeting, the Council confirmed the NFC’s intention to sign a “political pact” with the armed forces.

NFC spokesperson Mustafa Tambour provided additional details about the meeting, stating that they briefed al-Burhan on the coalition’s recent founding conference and its objectives. Tambour stressed the NFC’s solidarity with the armed forces in their battle against the RSF, emphasizing the importance of defeating the rebellious militia in order to move forward politically. He made it clear that no progress on the political front would be possible until the RSF threat was eliminated.

Tambour concluded by announcing, “The meeting resulted in an agreement to establish a political charter between the armed forces and the NFC.” He also quoted Burhan as expressing the government’s desire for all political factions to come to a consensus in order to form a government and begin the process of rebuilding Sudan once the conflict is resolved.

Malik Agar has been at the forefront of efforts to create a broad civilian coalition capable of leading a transitional government and overseeing the preparations for future elections. The NFC itself comprises several parties that were signatories to the Juba Peace Agreement, as well as various civil society organizations and regional and political entities.

In summary, the NFC’s decision to collaborate with the Sudanese military in signing a political declaration marks a significant step towards resolving the political crisis in Sudan. This move aims to bring stability to the region, facilitate a peaceful transition of power, and pave the way for a brighter future for the country and its people.
