On April 15, 2024, the Dutch government announced a significant increase in emergency aid funding for Sudan, totaling an additional €10 million. This announcement was made by Liesje Schreinemacher, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, during a conference on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan held in Paris, France. The funds will be directed to the World Food Programme to provide much-needed food assistance to the Sudanese people.

Schreinemacher emphasized the urgency of the situation in Sudan, noting that despite nearly 18 million people facing acute hunger in the country, it often goes unnoticed by the international community. She stressed the importance of ramping up international pressure to secure a ceasefire and ensure that the millions of Sudanese refugees in the region have a hopeful future.

In addition to food shortages, Sudan also faces challenges in delivering humanitarian aid to those in need due to conflict and logistical obstacles. The United Nations reports that only 10% of the population facing hunger is currently receiving food aid, with conflict zones posing particular challenges for aid delivery. Warring parties in Sudan have been accused of hindering the delivery of emergency assistance, with aid workers facing border blockages and bureaucratic hurdles.

Despite these challenges, local communities have stepped up to fill the gaps in aid delivery, with women and young people playing a vital role in providing food, protection, and medical assistance in hard-to-reach areas. The Netherlands’ increased contribution brings their total support for emergency aid to Sudan in 2024 to over €42 million, with additional support provided for Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries.

According to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), approximately 8 million Sudanese people have been internally displaced, with 2 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The situation in Sudan remains critical, with ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges requiring continued support from the international community.

Overall, the Netherlands’ commitment to emergency aid in Sudan highlights the importance of addressing humanitarian crises and supporting vulnerable populations in times of need. The government’s increased funding will help alleviate the suffering of millions of Sudanese people and contribute to efforts to secure peace and stability in the region.
