National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation: President Traoré urges Burkinabè to take simple actions such as consuming local foods and products
Ouagadougou, March 26, 2024 (Africa Links 24) – On the occasion of the first edition of the National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation, the Transitional President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, invited Burkinabè on Monday night on national television to “take simple actions such as planting a tree for every happy event, consuming local foods and products”.
“By launching these days of patriotic engagement and citizen participation, I invite every Burkinabè to take simple actions such as planting a tree for every happy event; contributing to the effort of peace,” said the Transitional President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, on Monday night in a national broadcast on television.
In his message, the head of state urged Burkinabè to “engage as VDP (Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland), to conscientiously perform their duties as public servants, to protect and respect public property, to pay taxes; to respect traffic rules; to consume local foods and products, etc.”
The National Days of Patriotic Engagement and Citizen Participation were established on November 22, 2023 by the Council of Ministers. They are scheduled to be held on March 26 and October 2 of each year for fifteen days.
According to President Ibrahim Traoré, the Government instituted these Days in order to consolidate the foundations of the Burkinabè Nation, strengthen social cohesion and living together.
He indicated that the choice of the first date refers to the political commitment of the nation’s hero, President Thomas Sankara, who delivered one of his historic speeches, “Who are the enemies of the people?”, on March 26, 1983 when he was Prime Minister.
As for the second date, October 2, President Traoré pointed out that it recalls October 2, 1983, the day when President Thomas Sankara delivered the Discourse on Political Orientation (DOP) of the People’s Democratic Revolution.
This period reminds us of many achievements in terms of examples of patriotic engagement, he noted.
By way of illustration, the head of state mentioned “the battle of the rail, the promotion of consumption of local products, women’s emancipation, common interest work, mana mana operations.”
He also added “the public investment effort (EPI 86) for which public servants gave up 5 to 12% of their salary to allow the State to build health centers, schools, wells, social housing and provide ambulances to some remote areas.”
The establishment of patriotic engagement days comes at a time of concerning security and humanitarian context, characterized by terrorist attacks that are mourning our populations.
President Ibrahim Traoré seized the opportunity to express his gratitude to the “valiant defense and security forces and brave volunteers for the defense of the homeland for the victories achieved in the fight to regain our dignity and the integrity of our territory.”
“These days offer us the opportunity to encourage Burkinabè to selflessly contribute to their country. I invite you to proudly support these days, to promote the values of patriotism and citizenship,” he stated.
