Nancy Muthoni, 36, went missing after having supper with her family in Kiharu village, Mukurweini sub-County, Nyeri County on January 23 at 10 pm. According to her husband, Ben Maina, she mentioned that she was going to settle a debt with her local shopkeeper after supper before she disappeared.

Earlier that day, Muthoni had hosted a chama and received some cash from the group. She had promised to give her husband Sh7,000 to pay for their daughter’s school fees. “We usually eat in the living room, but that day she decided to eat in the kitchen,” said Mr. Maina. “She left her house at 10 pm to pay off a debt she owed the shopkeeper, that was the last day I saw my wife of 17 years,” Mr. Maina said.

The following day, the mutilated body of a middle-aged woman was found dumped in a thicket in Kiharu village, several kilometers from her home. The woman’s face was disfigured, and her body had bruises on her neck and thighs. One of her arms was broken, indicating that she had struggled with the perpetrator or perpetrators who murdered her. A preliminary medical report indicated that the woman was also sodomized before she was killed.

Mr. Maina learned of his wife’s death on Facebook when someone posted a photo of a body dumped on the Thangathi-Ichamara road. Her father, Gibson Wanjohi, demanded justice for his daughter, and neighbors described Muthoni as hardworking and kind-hearted.

There were signs of a struggle between the woman and the suspected killer at the scene. The body, which was found in a ditch, was discovered by a woman cutting napier grass at her farm. The body was taken to Mukurweini sub-County Hospital for a post-mortem examination, and the police are conducting investigations to find the perpetrator.
