The Office of the National Chairman (ONC) head, Ms. Hadijah Namyalo, issued a stern warning that Uganda is a sovereign state and not a monarchy. She emphasized that leaders should be elected by the citizens rather than being imposed by a group of “selfish people” forcing their candidates on the population. Speaking to journalists at her office in Kampala, Ms. Namyalo urged Ugandans to focus on eradicating poverty and working towards improving their families’ livelihoods, rather than being swayed by political distractions.

Her comments come at a time when some Ugandans are advocating for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the First Son and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Duties, to succeed his father in the 2026 elections. Gen. Kainerugaba also leads the Patriotic League of Uganda, a political pressure group pushing for his candidacy.

Addressing the attempts to push for a specific candidate, Ms. Namyalo reiterated that Uganda is not a monarchy and stressed that President Yoweri Museveni is already preparing to contest in the upcoming elections. She urged those seeking power to wait for the democratic process and not confuse the public with premature campaigns.

Ms. Namyalo also called out unidentified political groups for misinterpreting her previous statements and attacking her. She urged Ugandans to resist the influence of such groups and instead focus on verifying their details in the NRM (National Resistance Movement) register.

During the launch of the NRM registrar, President Museveni emphasized the importance of updating party records. Ms. Namyalo encouraged all Ugandans to visit their local parishes to confirm their membership status and ensure that they are properly registered as NRM supporters. She emphasized the need for unity within the party to secure President Museveni’s re-election in 2026.

In conclusion, Ms. Namyalo’s warning serves as a reminder to Ugandans to prioritize national development and democratic processes over individual ambitions. By engaging in the electoral process and upholding the principles of democracy, citizens can contribute to a stable and prosperous future for Uganda.
