The Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor (ErongoRed) is currently dealing with the aftermath of an attempted theft and vandalism that occurred at Rössing Mountain. The perpetrators targeted ErongoRed’s infrastructure, cutting down power poles and damaging nearly a kilometer of power and communication cables. This criminal act has had serious consequences, causing major broadcasting interruptions at the coast since Monday.
As a result of the damaged infrastructure, the power supply has been disrupted, impacting the operations of several major broadcasters along the coast. In addition, the vandalism has affected a wide range of services, including police and emergency radio frequencies. The incident not only poses a threat to the normal functioning of these services but also creates a potential safety hazard for the community.
ErongoRed spokesperson, Benjamin Ngombe, confirmed the incident, stating that the power supply and radio tower at Rössing Mountain had been damaged. While providing limited information at this time, Ngombe assured that their team is actively working on restoring the system. He mentioned that a detailed report will be released once investigations are completed. The Erongo police have also acknowledged the incident and stated that they will compile an incident report once ErongoRed provides all the necessary information.
It is crucial for the authorities to address this issue promptly to prevent further disruptions and safeguard the community’s safety. Cable theft and infrastructure vandalism not only disrupt essential services but also pose a threat to public security. The incident at Rössing Mountain serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting critical infrastructure and the need for increased vigilance to prevent such criminal activities.
