The Information Minister, Emma Theofelus, has shared details about the official memorial service and burial arrangements for President Hage Geingob this weekend, including information on transport pick-up points in Windhoek.

In an effort to allow public servants to partake in the ceremonial route procession and attend the memorial and funeral services for the late president, the Prime Minister has authorized regular staff members to work until 10:00 on Friday, 23 February 2024, with the exception of those performing emergency and critical services.

To facilitate media coverage of the funeral services, the Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, and Safety and Security has temporarily exempted visas and work permits for journalists until 27 February 2024. This means journalists coming into Namibia to cover the funeral services will not need to apply for or pay for a visa or work permit for the specified period.

The government has expressed gratitude for the support from the sister countries of Angola and Botswana. Angola has donated 20 cars for use during the funeral service, while Botswana has donated 45 cars and motorbikes for the same purpose.

Furthermore, the Minister has provided a list of municipal bus pick-up points for the public during the funeral weekend. These pick-up points are designed to facilitate transportation for those wishing to attend the services in Windhoek and include various locations in different constituencies.

The official funeral arrangements also include provisions for vendors to sell their goods at designated points during the memorial service proceedings. However, the sale of alcohol around the Independence Stadium vicinity is prohibited, and law enforcement agencies will monitor these activities.

Minister Theofelus encourages vendors to provide a service to the over 50,000 people expected to attend the memorial service, as the official programme is set to run from the morning hours of Saturday, 24 February 2024, until the evening hours. Refreshments by the state will only be made available at the end of the programme.

Finally, the announcement is concluded with a message from Emma Theofelus, the Minister of Information and Communication Technology. The Namibian also offers a subscription service for those looking for credible journalism, with a monthly investment of N$85 for in-depth reporting and opinions.

In summary, the detailed announcement provides essential logistical information for the public, public servants, and media practitioners related to the official memorial service and burial arrangements for President Hage Geingob, as well as encouraging support for credible journalism.
