Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has announced that unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated as of Sunday, 31 March. This decision comes after a three-month extension from the initial deadline on 31 December 2023. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) has made it clear that the 31 March deadline will not be extended any further.
According to MTC spokesperson John Ekongo, the introduction of an online SIM registration process did not result in an increase in registrations after the extension to 31 December. This indicates that there is still a significant number of unregistered SIM cards in circulation.
After the 31 March deadline, there will be a three-month grace period for users to register their SIM cards. During this grace period, unregistered SIM cards will be deactivated and eventually lost if not registered. Ekongo explained that while the number will still be available for utilization during the grace period, it will not receive any services. Users will not be able to make calls or use any services associated with the unregistered SIM card.
Users who register their SIM cards during the grace period will have their numbers reactivated. However, if the grace period elapses without registration, the number and any profiles or services associated with it will be permanently lost.
It is important for users to take action before the 31 March deadline to avoid any disruptions to their communication services. MTC is urging all users to register their SIM cards to ensure that they can continue to use their numbers and associated services without interruption.
In an effort to keep users informed and up-to-date, MTC is reminding everyone to complete the registration process before the deadline. Failure to do so may result in the loss of the SIM card number and any services associated with it.
