Lindsay Scott, a respected figure in the Namibian media industry, passed away on February 10th in Falkirk, Scotland at the age of 70 after battling a bacterial infection. He was known for his contributions to broadcasting, music, and sports production, leaving a lasting impact on the industry and those around him.

Before Namibia gained independence, Scott was a prominent broadcaster at the South West Africa Broadcasting Corporation’s English service. He played a key role during the transition to the current national broadcaster, the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). His work as an executive producer in the sports department and his memorable voice on the airwaves in the 1980s shaped the media landscape in Namibia.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Scott was also a talented musician who performed with folk music ensembles, including a performance with David Bowie as part of the Scottish group JSD in 1972. His musical talents and contributions were widely recognized and celebrated.

Colleagues, friends, and family have been sharing tributes to Scott on social media, highlighting the profound impact he had on their lives. Menesia Muinjo, NBC chief news and programming officer, spoke fondly of her 33 years of working with Scott. She recalled how he mentored young reporters, including herself, and boosted their confidence by sharing his knowledge and experience.

Muinjo also highlighted Scott’s influence on her pronunciation, program packaging, and communication skills. She expressed her sadness at his passing and emphasized the loss not only to her personally but to the entire broadcasting community.

Scott’s daughter, Genna Grové, expressed her love for her father and how he was cherished in Namibia, his home away from home. She mourned his passing and reflected on the piece of him that will always remain in her heart.

Maria Davel-Wallis remembered Scott’s passion for music and shared a special memory of their time together. Andrew Mark Weir recalled Scott’s humility and wit, mentioning his reluctance to talk about playing the violin with David Bowie. He expressed his sorrow at Scott’s passing and remembered him fondly.

Scott’s legacy goes beyond his professional achievements, touching on the personal connections he forged in an era of camaraderie within the media industry. His impact on his colleagues and the industry as a whole is remembered with fondness and respect.

As the Namibian community mourns the loss of Lindsay Scott, they remember him for his talent, mentorship, and the lasting impression he left on the broadcasting and music industries in Namibia. May he rest in peace.
