A tragic incident unfolded in Windhoek on Friday when a young man named Aman, aged 20, allegedly took his own life with his cousin’s Baikal pistol. The man reportedly took the firearm from underneath his cousin’s pillow while he was asleep, as detailed in the police’s weekend crime report. The body of Salomo Valombola, the deceased, was discovered in the toilet of the house he shared with his cousin.
According to the report, the cousin woke up to the sound of a gunshot and noticed that the deceased was missing from his room, along with the firearm he had placed under his pillow. It was alleged that the cousin acted recklessly and negligently by keeping the firearm in such close proximity while sleeping. Although the cousin has not been arrested, the firearm, along with live rounds and a magazine, was confiscated.
No suicide note was found, and there is no suspicion of foul play in the incident. Valombola’s next of kin have been notified, and police investigations are ongoing.
In another disturbing incident, a 37-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a 31-year-old man in Gibeon on the same day. The woman was asleep in her shack when the suspect entered her room, with some family members sleeping outside during the attack. The suspect fled when the victim screamed for help, but was later identified by the family members and subsequently arrested. Police investigations into the case are still underway.
Additionally, a case of rape was reported in Omuntele on Saturday, where a 10-year-old girl was raped by a 20-year-old man on her way home from school. The suspect allegedly caught up with the victim and her friend on their way home and committed the heinous crime. The suspect has been apprehended and was scheduled to appear in court.
Meanwhile, the police in Walvis Bay are seeking the public’s assistance in apprehending the culprits responsible for a copper theft incident in the town. Approximately 1.2 tonnes of copper wire, valued at N$300,000, were stolen from overhead lines near the C-14 road outside Walvis Bay. The suspects reportedly used a saw to cut nine powerline poles, causing significant damage to the electrical infrastructure and resulting in a blackout in parts of Walvis Bay. Anyone with information on the suspects is urged to contact the police immediately.
As these incidents continue to unfold, it is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly. Let us work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all members of society.
