Rehoboth mayor Amanda Groenewaldt recently made an exciting announcement regarding the progress of preparations to reopen the Reho-Spa Recreational Resort. Speaking at a recent Rehoboth Town Council public meeting at the town, Groenewaldt shared the latest updates with the residents of the Rehoboth Urban West Constituency.

This meeting marked the council’s first public engagement with the residents in this constituency at the Hermanus van Wyk Community Hall since the beginning of the year. The meeting was conducted by the seven elected councillors from the council, who provided important information and updates to the community.

The Reho-Spa Recreational Resort, which features a large swimming pool, thermal bath, bungalows, and conference facilities, was initially closed in 2008. Reports indicated that the facility shut down due to significant liabilities accrued by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) following a failed public-private partnership venture. The spa faced closure again in 2011, but attempts to reopen it began in 2014 when a community trust signed a 12-year lease agreement with NWR, the owners of the resort.

Groenewaldt announced that the Rehoboth Town Council has acquired the title deed of Reho-Spa from the Ministry of Works and Transport. She expressed enthusiasm over the completion of this process, stating, “Reho-Spa is now in the name of the Rehoboth Town Council. Recently, we signed the last page.”

Furthermore, Groenewaldt encouraged residents to participate in a rehabilitation and clean-up campaign for the facility as part of a community initiative. Two designated days, April 11th and 12th, were set aside for the community to come together and clean up Reho-Spa. She invited all members of the public to join and contribute to the efforts, emphasizing that everyone is welcome to participate with their hats, overalls, and equipment.

During the meeting, councillors presented information on gazetted tariffs for rates and taxes, provided updates on strategic plans, capital projects budgeted for the year, the interim valuation process, alienation scheme progress, and land delivery in Burgershoek and Volstruis Vlakte. Additionally, discussions covered topics such as Banhoff planning, motions submitted by councillors, debt collection in the Rehoboth townlands, general municipal accounts, pending vacancies, and the reinstatement of live streaming of ordinary council meetings – a request that received overwhelming support from attendees.

Overall, the meeting provided a platform for transparent communication between the council and residents, showcasing the progress and initiatives undertaken to reopen the Reho-Spa Recreational Resort. With community involvement and support, the revitalization of this popular recreational facility is on the horizon, promising exciting opportunities for the residents of Rehoboth.
