McHenry Venaani, the leader of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), spoke out about Namibia’s ongoing challenges with poverty, inequality, corruption, and government mismanagement despite 34 years of independence. The statement was made as Namibia marked its 34th Independence Day with an event that drew over 10,000 people in the Zambezi region at Katima Mulilo.

Venaani highlighted the fact that even after three decades of self-determination, the nation is still struggling with systemic issues that should have been addressed long ago. He called for transformative leadership and decisive action to address these pressing challenges, stressing that it is unacceptable for Namibia to still be grappling with poverty, inequality, corruption, and maladministration after gaining independence.

He emphasized that the disparity between those living in poverty and those enjoying privileges showcases the failure of successive ruling-party governments to prioritize the needs of the people. Venaani urged for urgent action to tackle these issues and rebuild public trust by promoting accountability, transparency, and effective governance.

On the other hand, President Nangolo Mbumba used his keynote address at the Independence Day event to call for unity among citizens. He urged against tribalism, racism, regionalism, corruption, and crime, warning that those who seek to disrupt Namibia’s peace, unity, and economic progress are enemies of the people. Mbumba emphasized the importance of working together towards economic freedom and shared prosperity.

He called on the security cluster to increase vigilance in safeguarding Namibia against internal and external threats. With the upcoming polls on 27 November, Mbumba stressed the importance of upholding law and order to ensure peaceful, credible, and fair elections. He acknowledged Namibia’s proud legacy of democracy, peace, stability, and unity in diversity, urging citizens to come together to protect and nurture the country’s future.

Mbumba also highlighted the government’s efforts in promoting economic growth in the Zambezi region through infrastructure development, such as extending electricity lines, upgrading roads, and investing in agricultural projects. These initiatives aim to stimulate business opportunities, promote tourism, and improve access to services for communities in the region.

Zambezi region governor Lawrence Sampofu echoed the importance of unity and economic development for the nation, encouraging the youth to use education as a tool to shape a brighter future. He called on citizens to pledge to contribute positively to the country’s economic development and growth.

As Namibia moves forward, it is crucial for citizens to come together, address systemic challenges, and work towards a brighter future for all. President Mbumba’s call for unity and collective responsibility underscores the need for transformative leadership and decisive action to build a prosperous and peaceful nation for generations to come.
