The Oshana region in Namibia has seen a gradual increase in its population over the years, which has led to a rise in poverty levels. The 2011 national census recorded a population of 176,674, and by 2023, this number had grown to 230,801. This surge in population has put a strain on the region’s resources, leading to high poverty levels, particularly among the youth who are facing unemployment.

Andreas Utoni, the chairperson of the Oshana regional council, highlighted the alarming poverty index in the region. In an interview with The Namibian, he acknowledged the need to address this issue by creating more employment opportunities for the youth and implementing training programs to enhance their skills and employability.

Utoni pointed out the specific challenges faced by the region, such as high youth unemployment and inadequate infrastructure. To combat these issues, the regional leadership plans to establish more youth employment schemes and training courses. They also aim to divide larger constituencies, like Ongwediva, into smaller ones to improve service delivery and efficiency.

One of the key focus areas for infrastructure development in the Oshana region is improving feeder roads that connect schools, clinics, and institutions of higher learning. Utoni emphasized the importance of providing proper road infrastructure and ensuring access to potable water for every household in the region.

In an effort to empower the youth and encourage them to venture into agriculture, the regional leadership plans to create more green schemes. By promoting agriculture, they hope to enable young people to produce their own food and generate income. Additionally, they aim to build more youth centers and soccer stadiums to keep the youth engaged and deter them from engaging in criminal activities.

Utoni also highlighted the economic potential that comes with the population increase in the region. He believes that the growing population will attract potential investors and boost the economy. With proper planning and focus on priorities, the region aims to enhance service delivery and development to meet the needs of all population groups, particularly addressing the issue of high youth unemployment.

Overall, the Oshana region is taking proactive steps to address the challenges posed by its growing population. By implementing youth-centered initiatives, improving infrastructure, and focusing on economic development, the region hopes to alleviate poverty and create a better future for its residents.
