Namibia is gearing up for its upcoming Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for 27 November. The urban and rural development minister, Erastus Uutoni, made the official announcement during the launch of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) 2024 electoral calendar in Windhoek.

According to the ECN chairperson, Elsie Nghikembua, voters’ cards issued since 2015 will no longer be valid and will not be accepted at the November polls. She emphasized that only registered voters will be able to participate in the upcoming elections. The general voter registration period is set to take place from 3 June to 1 August.

The nomination process for candidates will also be conducted within specific timelines. Independent candidates will have the opportunity to nominate themselves on 14 October, while political parties will nominate their candidates on 16 October. Additionally, Namibians abroad and seafarers will have their voting day on 13 November.

All eligible Namibians are urged to register afresh for the Presidential and National Assembly elections to ensure their participation in the democratic process. Unlike previous elections, this year’s electoral process will revert to using manual ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines.
