The Versteende Woud Primary School in Khorixas experienced a health scare on Monday when about 15 pupils were rushed to the Khorixas District Hospital after complaining of abdominal cramps and diarrhoea. As a precaution, samples were sent to a laboratory to be tested to determine the cause of the symptoms.

Health and social services executive director Ben Nangombe provided an update on the situation, noting that the affected pupils had been seen by medical personnel and subsequently discharged. The priority now is to await the laboratory results, which will reveal the cause of the symptoms. Nangombe assured that once the results are available, they will be shared with the media and the public.

The majority of the affected pupils are boarders at the Eddie Bowe Primary School hostel in Khorixas. It was reported that the pupils fell ill at Versteende Woud Primary School, with 13 from that school and two from Eddie Bowe Primary School, according to education executive director Sanet Steenkamp. The Eddie Bowe Primary School hostel is home to 299 boarders.

In response to the incident, a report is currently being drafted to provide a comprehensive overview of what occurred.

By prioritizing the well-being of the affected pupils, school and health officials are taking the necessary steps to identify the cause of the illness and prevent further outbreaks. The collaboration between medical personnel, education officials, and the media underscores the commitment to transparency and public awareness. Moving forward, the timely sharing of the laboratory results will provide clarity and enable appropriate measures to be taken to address the situation.
