Two councillors representing the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) were recently elected as members of the town’s management committee. This significant development showcases the growing influence of the IPC within the governance structure of the northern town of Oniipa.

Stefanus Kambidi and David Nghifikepunye, both IPC representatives, secured seats on the management committee. Nghifikepunye was further elected as the chairperson of the committee, indicating a shift in leadership dynamics within the town’s council.

With the inclusion of the two IPC councillors, the party now wields substantial power over the affairs of Oniipa. They will be serving alongside Swapo councillor Hileni Iidhogela, collectively making decisions that impact the town’s future and development.

The Oniipa Town Council is comprised of seven councillors, with three positions designated for the management committee. Additionally, the mayor and deputy mayor hold ex-officio roles on the committee, contributing to the overall governance and administration of the town.

In the recent council elections, Patemoshela Nakanyala, an IPC councillor, was re-elected as the deputy mayor of Oniipa. Jafet Augustus, a Swapo councillor, retained his position as the mayor, ensuring continuity in leadership within the council.

Joining the management committee as ordinary councillors are Swapo representatives David Kambonde and Selma Namuhuya, further diversifying the council’s composition and perspectives.

The council had faced a period of inactivity since November 2023, attributed to disagreements among Swapo councillors. Reports suggest that internal conflicts within the party culminated in a breakdown of council functions, disrupting governance and decision-making processes.

The situation escalated earlier this year when Armas Amukwiyu, the Swapo regional coordinator for Oshikoto, suspended Mayor Augustus for allegedly supporting an opposition party in opposition to Swapo. This move underscored the political tensions within the council and the broader implications for party allegiances in local governance.

Overall, the recent developments in the Oniipa Town Council reflect a shift in power dynamics, with the IPC gaining traction and influence in decision-making processes. The inclusion of IPC councillors in key leadership roles signals a changing landscape in local politics and sets the stage for collaboration and partnership among different party representatives for the betterment of the town and its residents.
