The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security has been allocated N$70 million as part of its N$7.4 billion budget for the implementation of electronic identification (ID) cards, also known as e-IDs. This funding was announced by Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, Iipumbu Shiimi, during his budget speech in the National Assembly.
According to Shiimi, the allocation of over N$70 million is specifically earmarked for the Ministry to facilitate the roll-out of electronic identification cards and ensure comprehensive coverage of civil registration through a mass registration drive for national documents across the country.
The implementation of electronic ID cards is a significant step towards modernizing and digitizing Namibia’s identification systems. E-IDs offer increased security features, convenience, and efficiency compared to traditional paper-based identification cards. By adopting e-IDs, the Ministry aims to enhance the overall efficiency of the civil registration process and ensure that all citizens have access to secure and reliable identification documents.
The move towards electronic identification is part of the Government’s broader efforts to enhance service delivery, improve data management, and strengthen national security. Electronic ID cards will not only streamline the process of verifying individuals’ identities but also contribute to the prevention of identity fraud and illegal activities.
The allocation of N$70 million demonstrates the Government’s commitment to investing in the necessary infrastructure and technology required for the successful implementation of electronic identification systems. This funding will support the procurement of equipment, software, and other resources needed to facilitate the mass registration of citizens for e-IDs.
Furthermore, the Ministry’s initiative to roll out electronic identification cards aligns with international trends towards digitalization and the use of technology to improve governance and public services. Electronic identification systems have been successfully implemented in various countries around the world, leading to increased efficiency, security, and convenience for citizens.
As Namibia transitions towards a digital economy and society, the implementation of e-IDs will play a crucial role in enabling secure and reliable digital transactions, online services, and access to e-government platforms. Electronic identification cards will also facilitate the integration of digital solutions in various sectors, such as healthcare, education, and finance, leading to improved service delivery and enhanced citizen engagement.
In conclusion, the allocation of N$70 million for the roll-out of electronic identification cards underscores the Government’s commitment to modernizing Namibia’s identification systems and enhancing service delivery to its citizens. By investing in electronic identification technology, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security is paving the way for a more secure, efficient, and digitally-enabled future for Namibia.
