The Ministry of Health and Social Services is urging the public to remain cautious and take necessary measures to protect themselves against Covid-19. This advice comes in light of the ministry’s report of 28 new active Covid-19 cases and three hospitalizations in the Oshana, /Kharas, and Erongo regions.

During a statement on Wednesday, the health ministry’s executive director, Ben Nangombe, shared this information and emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring of the epidemiological situation. Nangombe also highlighted the importance of genomic surveillance to promptly detect any emerging variants of the virus.

In addition, Nangombe cautioned the public against sharing unverified or outdated information about Covid-19 on social media and other platforms. He reassured the public that despite the repeal of regulations in July 2022, the ministry remains committed to public health surveillance and will continue testing and record-keeping activities.

Nangombe noted that Namibia had seen a steady plateau in Covid-19 cases, with an average of fewer than 106 cases per month nationwide over the past 12 months. However, he acknowledged a recent localized outbreak in Rehoboth and stressed the importance of effectively managing cases in line with established guidelines. Despite this outbreak, Nangombe reassured the public that there have been no severe illnesses or hospitalizations resulting from this surge.

Emphasizing the shift in responsibility since the repeal of regulations, Nangombe urged each member of the public to remain vigilant against Covid-19 and other infections. He pointed out that while Namibia is no longer classified as a public health emergency, sporadic cases of the virus continue to persist.

Nangombe’s statement underlines the ongoing need for preventative measures and awareness to combat the spread of Covid-19 in Namibia. The Ministry’s commitment to public health surveillance remains unwavering, and the public is encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.

It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and prioritize their health in order to contribute to the ongoing efforts to manage and mitigate the impact of Covid-19 in Namibia. By following health guidelines, staying informed, and taking proactive measures, the public can contribute to the overall safety and well-being of the community.
